Complex overlooks the pyramids of Giza and is a one of the largest museums in the world displaying the heritage of a single civilization. The Museum contains over 100,000 artefacts, reflecting Egypt’s past from prehistory until the Greek and Roman Periods.  The GEM also hosts over 5,000 artefacts from the tomb of the golden Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

After lunch, visit The Great Pyramids of Giza are the only present-day survivors of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, built over 4,500 years ago as giant tombs.  The pyramids are truly monumental in scale, with the largest, Khufu’s, constructed from over two million blocks.  Revel in the opportunity to  enter the interior of one of these legendary pyramids.  Ride like a local on camel back, then visit the Solar Museum – site of Cheops’ funeral boat – and the Great Sphinx.

Thursday, December 3, 2020 – Cairo

Visit the newly refurbished Coptic Museum. This beautiful museum was first completed in 1908, using land belonging to the Coptic Church in Egypt. It displays a wonderful collection of sculpture dating from Pre-Christian times up until the fifth Century, as well as bone carvings, frescoes, icons relics and colorful textiles.

Next, visit the Synagogue of Ben Ezra, built during the time of the once-thriving Jewish community in Egypt under the leadership of Rabbi Ben Ezra. Inside, the so-called “Geniza Documents” were found, a treasure hailed as an unparalleled source of information about the life of the Jews in Egypt’s past.  After lunch, continue your tour to the Citadel, a medieval fortress built in 1176 to protect the city from Crusaders, which sits high above Cairo on a limestone hill.

With its grand, soaring architecture and rich decoration, the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, completed in 1363, is one of the finest in Egypt and also houses the mausoleum where Sultan Hassan’s sons are buried.  Finally, visit the fascinating Khan El-Khalili Bazaar, reputed to be the largest bazaar in the Middle East.

The tomb walls were white-washed and painted with murals of the nobles’ daily lives, making them quite different from royal tombs, where relief work focused on judgment and resurrection.

Visit the remains of the Workers’ Village at Deir El Medina.  This self-contained village on the West Bank where the workmen who built the kings’ and queens’ tombs lived in mud brick houses with their families. The site gives archeologists a view of how urban people lived in ancient Egypt.  The magnificent Medinet Habu is a series of temples built by the Pharaoh Ramses III (1182-1151 BC) and second only to Karnak Temple in size and complexity
